THE DEMOCRATIC APPROACH TO FASHION: So much for the age of the dictatorial celebrity editor. Glenda Bailey has decided to let the readers have their say. On the Harper’s Bazaar Web site, readers can now vote for which celebrities they would most like to see on upcoming issues (from “Will & Grace” star Debra Messing to thirtysomething supermodel Claudia Schiffer). And in the Glenda Bailey/Bonnie Fuller world of focus-group editing, they are even asked to vote on the semantics of possible coverlines. For example: Do you prefer “Makeover in Minutes” to “Instant Makeovers?”
But anti-democratic couture cuties shouldn’t get too snarky. As Bailey would rightly remind them, she’s up 12 percent on newsstands in the first half.

FORMER TEEN EDITOR BACK AT TIME INC: One of Time Inc.’s rising stars is back in the building. After a yearlong vacation with her family, Amy Palson, the former executive editor of Teen People, is working on In Style’s special issues. “She got back from her trip and wanted to get back to work, so we hired her,” says In Style’s executive editor Maria Baugh. Palson is working out of the company’s offices three to four days a week.

RALPH’S NEW LOOK: “I’m fulfilled. I am more than fulfilled. I went beyond my dreams,” says Ralph Lauren in a 14-page story in the November issue of Architectural Digest. Writer Paul Theroux visited Lauren at his Montauk home and talked to the designer about how he enjoys his homes — in Montauk, the shorefront villa in Jamaica, a mansion in Bedford, and the Double RL Ranch in Colorado. For the cover, Lauren is photographed with his wife, Ricky, sporting a new look: He has a full beard.

TRIAL BALLOON: Those giant, colorful Louis Vuitton balloons Marc Jacobs used outside his spring fashion show at the Andre Citroen Park in Paris last week migrated to the Tuileries Garden last Friday. But it wasn’t because of a crosswind. Rather, Harper’s Bazaar opted to use the logoed dirigibles as a backdrop for a shoot by Peter Lindbergh. Lindbergh’s luxury Hindenburgs are slated to appear in the January issue.

HOGAN’S HERO: Florinka Pesenti, public relations associate with the Hogan accessories line of shoes and accessories, temporarily left her day job for a completely new set of challenges as a reality TV star.

Pesenti landed a spot in CBS’ “The Amazing Race,” a 12-week series, which airs at 9 p.m. Wednesdays Oct. 2 – Dec. 18. Twelve teams are pitted against each other in a worldwide scavenger hunt, searching for clues and performing tasks to reach a goal. As an extensive traveler often in daunting circumstances, Pesenti felt up to the challenges, after viewing the show last season. On a whim, she applied, sent in a video, and was selected, along with Zach Behr, an old college friend who became her team partner.

Among her tasks — she chose skydiving over riding a donkey for seven miles to find a clue in Mexico, conquering her fear of heights. She can’t reveal who won, or how far she got in the elimination process. She got back to work Sept. 13, to fly immediately to Milan for the collections.
