London’s Savile Row tailors are showing off their lighter side this summer.
The Savile Row Bespoke Association has teamed with the European Confederation of Linen and Hemp, to commission eight Savile Row brands to create bespoke linen garments to be showcased in their store windows throughout June.
Pieces on display include Anderson & Sheppard’s royal blue linen jacket and bright yellow linen suit, Norton & Sons’ sky blue linen, silk and wool summer sports coat and Gieves & Hawkes’ double-breasted blue linen suit, complete with white buttons.
At the launch of the collaboration in London on Tuesday, Mark Henderson, deputy chairman of Gieves and Hawkes, said he already had an affinity with the fabric, having been captivated by the pink linen suit Robert Redford wore in the film adaptation of “The Great Gatsby.”
Meanwhile Anda Rowland, vice chairwoman at Anderson & Sheppard, said that the house has already had “strong interest,” from its clients in its linen pieces on show. “There are many misconceptions about the practicality of linen, which we find disappear as soon as the customer starts wearing one of our bespoke linen suits…made exactly to their specifications,” said Rowland.
