LONDON — There aren’t many Americans who can wow the Brits, but Clifford Grodd happens to be one of them.
The legendary Grodd, president and chief executive of Paul Stuart, was named Export Personality of the Year at the annual UK Fashion Export Awards, earlier this month. The award goes to an individual who has made a significant contribution to exports from the UK.
Last year’s winner was Rose Marie Bravo, former chief executive of Burberry.
“Our genesis and inspiration was English tailoring,” said Grodd after he received the award. “We took that inspiration to America – and moved it on. We cater to an intelligent consumer, and take pride in our clientele,” he added.
The utterly gracious Grodd, who has been at the helm of the store since 1952, said he was overwhelmed by the award, which he received from HRH The Princess Royal, also known as Princess Anne. He shook the princess’ hand, and then thanked his cheering audience by blowing them kisses on his way back to his table during the ceremony at London’s Landmark Hotel.
