Musicians, H&M Join To Raise AIDS Awareness

Participating artists, all of whom donated their time to the project, include Rihanna, Good Charlotte, My Chemical Romance, Rufus Wainwright, Scissor Sisters, Katharine Hamnett, The Cardigans, Timbaland and Ziggy Marley. The garments are priced from $12.90 to $34.90 and are made from 100 percent organic cotton.

The men’s and women’s collection of T-shirts, tanks and hoodies hits stores Jan. 31 (with the exception of Middle East doors) and is a collaboration among H&M, YouthAIDS prevention initiative and Designers Against AIDS. Twenty-five percent of sales will go to HIV/AIDS prevention projects worldwide.

“I love that H&M is providing a fashionable and easy way for young people all over the world to get involved in this worthy cause,” Rihanna said in a statement.

Twelve million people ages 15-24 are infected with the virus, and 50 percent of the newly infected fall in the same age group, according to a media release from H&M.

“Shopping has never been more important,” said Kate Roberts, founder of YouthAIDS. “Every garment sold makes a difference.”

All the garments feature an original print, and the neckline label carries the name of the designer. Good Charlotte’s design is subtle (a young couple under a red umbrella); others, like Katharine Hamnett’s “Use a Condom!” t-shirt, are more forthcoming.

“It’s a collection that’s rich in color, with considerable commitment going into every garment,” said H&M head of design Margareta van den Bosch. “The artists have created personal prints with a strong sense of style.”
