PARIS — As one of the world’s most important men’s wear meccas, the Pitti Uomo trade show, which opens on Tuesday in Florence, will also provide the chance to get to know the Carven man a little better. As this season’s guest designer, the Paris-based house will present its spring men’s collection on June 21 at a yet-to-be-disclosed location in the historic city.

Guillaume Henry, Carven’s creative director, who since June 2011 has been heading up the collection (which is steadily playing catch-up with its trendy sister, the house’s women’s ready-to-wear line, also designed by Henry), already has his own ideas about the guy’s personality.
“He’s charming. The Carven man definitely has this effortless elegance and this feeling of the guy next door who you are not afraid to talk to,” said the designer. For this season’s wardrobe, Henry celebrated three of his favorite Carven codes — freshness, spontaneity and elegance. “My story takes place between the Paris business district, La Défense, and Cap Ferret [a chic French coastal town in southwest France], where formal urban outfits meet casual chic,” said Henry, setting the scene. Playing with contrasts, he mixed poor and rich fabrics, technical and natural textiles, casual and tailored pieces. Characteristically quirky couplings from the collection include a Madras print shirt with a suit, and a sweatshirt with uniform-inspired pants or gardening overalls under a twisted classic jacket.
