Umbro Squashes Kim Jones Apparel

Umbro International and designer Kim Jones have pulled the plug on Umbro by Kim Jones apparel.

NEW YORK — Umbro International and designer Kim Jones have pulled the plug on Umbro by Kim Jones apparel, opting to produce only footwear and accessories under the brand.

All deliveries of fall 2007 apparel have been cancelled. An estimated 50 stores are affected, including Barneys New York.

Jones, an acclaimed British designer known for his youthful, streetwise aesthetic, continues to design apparel for his eponymous ready-to-wear line and is on track to show spring 2008 during New York Fashion Week.

Now in its ninth season, the Umbro by Kim Jones brand enjoys a cult following with fans of upscale streetwear, and has allowed Manchester, England–based Umbro to push beyond its soccer roots and gain fashion cachet.

“We can see a strong and continued interest in UBKJ footwear,” Colin Henry, senior vice-president of global product and marketing for Umbro, said in a statement. “We have therefore decided to concentrate on this side of the collaboration with Kim Jones, which will allow us to really hone the offering.”

The spring 2008 footwear line offers 22 styles that fuse iconic athletic looks with directional street flavor. Price points start as low as $80, which allows them to be sold through mainstream sports-lifestyle retailers.
