Gant will open three new stores during the next four months, inking leases for Los Angeles, Boston and Georgetown. The expansion boosts Gant’s presence in areas outside the Northeast, where New York is its largest U.S. market. The new shops will join four existing units, including the Fifth Avenue flagship and the Gant Rugger shops on Bleecker Street and Prince Street in New York, as well as the Gant Campus Store at Yale University in New Haven.

The 1,700-square-foot Los Angeles store, located at 1308 Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice, will open its doors in July. It will be dedicated to the younger Gant Rugger label, which is men’s only, and the Gant by Michael Bastian designer collaboration, which offers both men’s and women’s. The decor will incorporate lighter, more modernist elements than the two vintage-inspired Gant Rugger stores in downtown New York.
“Gant Rugger really speaks to the DNA of the area, which is hip, young and cool. The street is more about emerging designers than big branded names,” said David Arbuthnot, chief executive officer of Gant USA. Nearby stores on the retail stretch include Steven Alan, Jack Spade and The Stronghold.
Los Angeles is Gant’s second largest e-commerce market after New York and the brand has an established wholesale business in the city with Barneys New York, Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s. Additionally, the new shop will serve as a resource to service Gant’s outreach to celebrities, stylists and entertainment studios, added Arbuthnot.
The 2,000-square-foot Boston store opens in August at 324 Newbury Street. It will mix historic elements of the street-level brick building, previously occupied by Steve Madden, with new details like white wainscoting and subway tiles. Offerings will include the core Gant line as well as Gant Rugger and Gant by Michael Bastian. Nearby stores include Rugby Ralph Lauren, Scotch & Soda and Madewell.
The Georgetown store in Washington, D.C., is situated in a former jazz club, which will be renovated with interior touches like brick walls and a skylight. The 2,000-square-foot space, which will carry all three Gant lines, is near J. Crew, Rag & Bone and AllSaints.
Gant plans to open four to five additional North American stores in 2013 and is looking at a range of locales in the U.S. and Canada. The Sweden-based brand, which rang up $1.23 billion in global sales last year, is owned by Switzerland-based Maus Frères SA.
