Macy’s will open a freestanding men’s store in the high-volume Fashion Show Mall on the Las Vegas Strip next year.

The two-level 105,000-square-foot unit is slated to open in the spring and will be located in about half of a vacant space that previously housed a Robinsons-May store. The other half of the space will be returned to the mall’s owner, General Growth Properties, to lease to other small retailers. New tenants are expected to open in that space in 2013 and 2014.

Macy’s operates a 201,000-square-foot full-line store in the mall. After men’s is moved to the new store, the existing unit will be remodeled to increase selling space for women’s accessories, including handbags, shoes, fashion jewelry and fine jewelry. That work is expected to be completed by next fall.

At the same time, Macy’s said it will build a two-level, 180,000-square-foot store in the Shops at Summerlin, a new shopping center in west Las Vegas being developed by The Howard Hughes Corp. This will be Macy’s first full-line store to be built in the Las Vegas market since 1996. It is expected to open in fall 2014 and will anchor the 1.5 million-square-foot development, which will feature more than 125 stores and restaurants.

“Our two stores at Fashion Show Mall will primarily serve the 37 million tourists who visit the Las Vegas Strip each year,” said Peter Sachse, Macy’s chief stores officer. “Meanwhile, Macy’s Summerlin will be positioned to focus on the city’s resident population.”

Macy’s operates six men’s-only stores around the U.S., including one on Union Square in San Francisco.
