Connoisseurs of vintage men’s wear have a new spot to prowl.

Rare Vintage, a three-year-old shop specializing in women’s couture by Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci and others, is branching out into wares for the opposite sex.
Owner Juliana Cairone relates that she was recently visiting a client about purchasing Chanel accessories when it came up in conversation that the client’s husband had a one-of-a-kind collection of men’s wear he was willing to part with. The collection ranges from 1979 to 1984, and includes Giorgio Armani from the “American Gigolo” period as well as Yohji Yamamoto, Mitsuhiro Matsuda and the first Prada techno suit.
“There’s such a revival in women’s designers from the Eighties, and these men’s pieces look so modern,” Cairone said of the Matsuda pants with a full-length zipper, a patterned Issey Miyake shirt and high-waisted Dolce & Gabbana pants.
The men’s wear will be offered for sale Oct. 5 on the company’s Web site, rarevintage.com, as well its shop on 57th Street in New York. Prices start at $200 for Thierry Mugler wool pants with star-shaped buttons and go up from there.
Cairone said she hopes the items will be purchased by either true collectors or museums. And if sales of the men’s collection go as well as hoped, she will scour her haunts in France, Italy and the U.S. for more men’s items. “But I’d rather have nothing if they’re not really special pieces,” she said.
