When golfer Webb Simpson strolls onto the first tee at the Sony Open in Honolulu today, he’ll be sporting Polo Golf apparel.
The 24-year-old pro from Raleigh, N.C., has inked a sponsorship deal with the apparel label to serve as a brand ambassador for Polo Ralph Lauren Corp., be featured in a national advertising campaign and wear apparel from the Polo Golf collection.
“Ever since I was a kid, I watched my dad wearing Polo and my mom bought the same thing for me,” Simpson said in a telephone interview from Hawaii. And once he began competing in the sport, he would get a new Polo Golf shirt before every tournament. “So when I made the decision to turn pro, I knew I wanted to play in Polo clothes. They’re comfortable and I have always loved the classic style they represent.”
“Webb is an incredibly talented athlete who embodies youthfulness and a classic style, making him a perfect fit for the Polo Golf brand,” said David Lauren, senior vice president of advertising, marketing and corporate communications for Polo Ralph Lauren.
Under the terms of the deal, Simpson, who turned pro in 2008 and earned his PGA Tour card last year, also will make appearances on behalf of the brand throughout the year.
He joins the other Polo Golf-sponsored athletes — Tom Watson, Davis Love 3rd, Luke Donald, Jonathan Byrd and Morgan Pressel.
