Harvey Nichols Taps Stacey Cartwright as CEO

The executive, formerly with Burberry, is to replace Joseph Wan.

LONDON — Stacey Cartwright will become chief executive officer of the Harvey Nichols Group, the store said. She will replace longtime ceo Joseph Wan, who will retire at the end of March.

The announcement confirms a report in WWD on Sept. 30 that Cartwright, formerly chief financial officer and executive vice president at Burberry Group plc, was the front-runner for the job. Cartwright is to join the store on Feb. 17.

“Her appointment underlines our commitment to raising the bar even higher in this sector, strengthening both our leadership team” and the service, products and experience at home and abroad, said Dickson Poon, Harvey Nichols Group chairman.

Cartwright is well known in the industry for her experience building a brand on an international scale. During a Burberry conference call last April, she said she planned to take some time off, and was looking to move on to “a consumer-facing chief executive role in 2014.”

Wan took over as the store’s ceo in 1992, shortly after it was acquired by Hong Kong-based Dickson Concepts. He helmed the store throughout its Nineties heyday, and helped to take it public on the London Stock Exchange in 1996. It was subsequently delisted in 2003, and is wholly owned by Dickson Concepts.

He oversaw the brand’s expansion into catering, namely the launch of its fifth-floor food hall and restaurant and the Oxo Tower restaurant, bar and brasserie on London’s South Bank. He also directed the retailer’s expansion into more U.K. cities, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Ireland, Indonesia and Turkey.
