Alexis Mabille to Launch First Flagship

Store will be located on Rue de Grenelle, in Paris' Saint Germain district.

PARIS — Alexis Mabille, the eccentric dandy, Paris-based fashion designer who launched his label six years ago with a line of bow ties and pants, this September will open his first flagship, based on Rue de Grenelle, in the Saint Germain district here. The site, which will boast an interior filled with mirrors, inspired by the couture dressing rooms of yore, will stock Mabille’s women’s wear collection, including some unisex pieces.

“It will be like an intimate changing room with a Dorothy Draper feel, but young and fresh as I love mixing classic with contemporary,” said Mabille, adding that the upmarket location goes perfectly with his creations, which are based on “twisted bourgeoisie.”

Boosted by financial investment from a French private equity fund and an Asian “family office” fund, the designer, who declined to disclose figures, said he aims to open flagships in New York, London and Asia by 2014. He also hopes to open a small men’s store on Paris’ Right Bank by the end of year and soon will open a showroom and couture salon in the city’s Galerie Vivienne shopping gallery.

The house’s couture division accounts for a third of total sales.

Mabille, who until now has kept his business a family-based affair, said he plans to build a commercial team. His mother, Mireille Mabille, who is based in Lyon, France, oversees the brand’s production. Meanwhile, the designer’s brother, Martin Mabille, recently joined the brand as its managing director.

Alexis Mabille is distributed in around 40 sales points internationally. Celebrity supporters of the brand include Carla Bruni Sarkozy, Dita Von Teese and Sofia Coppola.
