PARIS — Chanel’s boutique on the Rue Cambon here is set to expand — and to an extent that will have it encroaching on nearby streets.

Chanel said Thursday it has purchased a building at 19 Rue Cambon on the corner of Rue Saint-Honoré that would be used to grow the historic location.
Construction is slated to begin in early 2014 with completion of the final project targeted for 2016. Details about the store’s final configuration have yet to be finalized.
In the interim, Chanel plans to open two temporary boutiques starting March 4, in the midst of Paris Fashion Week, in locations on Rue Saint-Honoré previously occupied by the accessories brand minaPoe and the Brazilian fashion designer Carlos Miele. Chanel said the units would remain in operation for about one year.
One of the temporary shops is to be devoted to accessories and shoes, starting with the cruise and spring collections. The other, abutting the Rue Duphot, is to house makeup and perfumes, including Chanel’s Les Exclusifs range.
The last major expansion of the Rue Cambon boutique occurred in 2003, when Chanel added 3,400 square feet of selling space.
Gabrielle Chanel opened her first boutique at 31 Rue Cambon in 1918.
Today, the main Cambon building extends all the way to Rue Duphot and houses the couture salon, offices and Karl Lagerfeld’s design studios.
Chanel also operates two boutiques a few blocks away on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré and on Rue Royale.
Bruno Pavlovsky, president of Chanel fashion, called those “two of the most prestigious shopping streets in Paris, if not the world, which explains the high traffic and our need for expansion in order to offer the best shopping experience to our clients.”
He noted that Chanel’s business in its Paris boutique is driven by local clients and tourists from a wide spectrum of nationalities from Asia, Europe, Russia, the Middle East and North and South America.
