NEW YORK — After 18 years at the same Madison Avenue address, J.Mendel will relocate a few blocks north this fall to double its store’s space.
The decision to pull up stakes for 787 Madison Avenue is part of an ongoing growth plan set in motion by its parent company, The Gores Group. The 2,745-square-foot setup will have three levels to show off its various categories. Gilles Mendel, creative director and chief executive officer of J.Mendel, said, “Since opening our existing boutique in 1995, we’ve introduced ready-to-wear, bridal, handbags, accessories and home furnishings. The new store will significantly increase our retail selling space, allowing us to show a full representation of the brand, and offer our clients an even more elevated level of personal service.”
When he first set up shop at 723 Madison Avenue, there was not the abundance of designer stores that there is today, especially on his block where the then-landlord focused on jewelry tenants. At that time, Mendel, a fifth-generation furrier, specialized in fur outerwear.
Located on the same block as Fred Leighton and next door to the Fogal of Switzerland boutique, the new space will be right across the street from the Oscar de la Renta and Michael Kors boutiques. De la Renta is also in the midst of a major expansion of his Madison Avenue store. Alexander McQueen, Kate Spade and Maje will be opening stores in the coming months.
Once the new three-floor J.Mendel store opens, accessories, rtw and fur will be displayed on the main floor, with bridal and eveningwear offered on the upper level. There will also be a separate area for VIP services on the lower level. The design is being handled by MR Architecture + Decor’s David Mann, who finessed J.Mendel’s Rue Saint-Honoré location as well as its leased stores at Bergdorf Goodman, Harrods and Hirshleifers. J.Mendel’s 723 Madison Avenue location will remain open until the new store is finished.
