MADRID — Continuing his international expansion, Michael Kors brought his uncluttered American style to Spain on Thursday night, inaugurating the company’s first freestanding location in the country on Madrid’s Calle Serrano. Luxury neighbors include Prada, Yves Saint Laurent and Loewe Men.
“Madrid is a wonderful city with beautiful women and great energy,” Kors enthused during a cocktail at the new store.

Guests included photographer Mario Testino, who said his foundation/gallery in Lima, Peru, is scheduled to open on July 12; dapper man-about-town Luis Medina; Maria Zurita, niece of Spain’s King Juan Carlos; and TV celeb Ana Garcia-Siñeriz.
The Madrid unit, Kors’ 17th store in Europe, is a full-line Lifestyle store with both Michael Kors and Michael Michael Kors women’s wear lines, accessories and fragrances. Prices range from $65 for a leather pencil case to almost $20,000 for a Swarovski crystal-embellished gown.
Spread over one and a half levels, the 6,458-square-foot flagship features the brand’s signature décor based on a soft color palette and open chrome and acrylic display casing.
“Spain is an exciting, vibrant market with a special personality; and we do very well with a fashion customer here,” said John Idol, chief executive officer of Michael Kors Holding Ltd. “The flagship is an extension of what we had,” he added, referring to the brand’s shop-in-shops at El Corte Inglés, Spain’s largest department store chain.
According to industry sources, Kors is negotiating a locale on Barcelona’s well-trafficked Paseo de Gracia. Company officials declined comment.
