HATS OFF: Maison Michel has opened its first pop-up store in Paris on Rue Cambon, a stone’s throw from the headquarters of Chanel, which owns the French milliner.
The unit at 19 Rue Cambon is the first retail outlet for the house, founded in 1936, which has seen a revival since Laetitia Crahay took over as artistic director in 2006, winning celebrity fans including Rihanna, Katy Perry and Elle Fanning with playful designs such as lace headbands with cat ears.

The pop-up store, slated to remain open until the end of March 2014, is designed to resemble a plush apartment. It features a Haussmann-style fireplace topped with a Baroque mirror, a zebra-skin rug and taxidermy animals — including a peacock and rabbits — alongside vintage and contemporary furniture.
The unit offers a selection of Maison Michel designs such as rabbit felt hats and hair accessories. From January, customers will be able to customize their purchases with a choice of flowers or feathers, or their initials.
Chanel acquired Maison Michel in 1996 and has since taken over a handful of other specialty ateliers in a bid to preserve France’s couture know-how. These include embroiderer Lesage, shoemaker Massaro, feather and flower house Lemarié and button specialist Desrues.
