NEW YORK — Isaac Mizrahi in the last year has received a lot of attention for designing the better-priced Liz Claiborne label, but he also has a eponymous collection, Isaac Mizrahi New York. Lest anyone forget, the designer in late August will open a 1,500-square-foot store for his own brand here on East 67th Street between Madison and Fifth Avenues.

The unit will be the designer’s first freestanding store in Manhattan, said Marisa Gardini, president and chief executive officer of Isaac Mizrahi, and will showcase his accessories, shoes and sportswear.
At one time, Mizrahi’s name was associated only with high-end fashion. He won three Council of Fashion Designers of America awards and operated a fashion house bankrolled by Chanel until the French luxury firm decided to pull the plug in 1998. At the time of its closing, Mizrahi’s collection business was estimated to do $8 million to $10 million at wholesale, plus another $15 million to $20 million for the bridge line, Isaac.
Mizrahi reinvented himself in 2003 when he signed a deal with Target to design the high-profile Isaac Mizrahi for Target line. At the same time, he continued designing a high-priced collection sold at Bergdorf Goodman.
Mizrahi’s Liz Claiborne gig seems to have reignited interest in his signature line. He is known for his use of color and injecting wit into his designs.
The store, which will be housed in a renovated brownstone, is now under construction. “We’re just deciding what things might be part of the store,” Gardini said.
