Women’s specialty apparel retailer Bebe Stores Inc. on Thursday posted a second-quarter loss and a decline in sales for the period.
For the three-month period ended Dec. 29, the net loss was $4.8 million, or 6 cents a diluted share, against net income of $6.6 million, or 8 cents, in the year-ago quarter. The retailer also posted a 10.8 percent decline in net sales to $135.5 million from $152 million. The company said comparable-store sales fell 10.5 percent in the period.
For the six months, the net loss was $7.4 million, or 9 cents a diluted share, on a net sales drop of 9.2 percent to $252.6 million. That’s compared with net income of $8.9 million, or 11 cents a diluted share, on net sales of $278.3 million in the year-ago quarter.
The company said it anticipates a comps decline for the third quarter in the midsingle-digit range. It also said the net loss is “expected to be in the range of midteens per share” compared with zero cents per share last year.
Shares of Bebe inched up 0.5 percent to close at $4.18 in over-the-counter trading. The earnings report after the markets closed sent shares of Bebe down 4 percent to $4.00 by 6:15 p.m. in after-market trading.
