Retail Apparel Priced Down in March

Overall CPI up 2.3 percent from a year earlier.

WASHINGTON—Retail apparel prices declined a seasonally adjusted 0.4 percent in March compared with February, and dropped 0.4 percent from a year earlier, the Labor Department said Wednesday in its Consumer Price Index.


Women’s apparel prices rose 0.2 percent in monthly comparisons and advanced 0.5 percent compared with March 2009. Men’s apparel prices were flat in March, but declined 3.5 percent compared with a year earlier.


The overall CPI rose 0.1 percent in March and advanced 2.3 percent in 12-month comparisons. The so-called core prices, which exclude food and energy prices, were flat compared with a month earlier and increased 1.1 percent from March 2009.
