PARIS — Carrefour SA has appointed Charles Desmartis as chief executive officer of Brepa Comércio e Participações Ltda, its holding company in Brazil, effective Nov. 4.

Desmartis, 56, will be in charge of Carrefour Comércio e Indústria, the division including Carrefour hypermarkets, Bairro supermarkets and financial services, as well as the cash and carry format Atacadão.

“This organization will enable a new phase in Carrefour’s development in Brazil, marked by the renovation of the store network and the acceleration of expansion,” Carrefour stated.

Desmartis has been in charge of group financial control since 2011 and was formerly chief financial officer of Axalto, Gemalto and Europcar.

A graduate of France’s Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales (HEC) and Stanford University, he began his career at the French-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce in São Paulo and speaks fluent Portuguese.
