The chain, which opened a New York design office in 2007 and later upgraded to a 59,000-square-foot space at 1400 Broadway, now plans to add two additional floors and grow to more than 100,000 square feet by 2014. The current studio houses 140 designers and support staff, who design and develop 13 brands, including Simply Vera Vera Wang, Dana Buchman, Candies, Jennifer Lopez, LC Lauren Conrad and Rock & Republic.
“Having a New York presence, in the heart of America’s fashion capital, has been instrumental in growing our private and exclusive brand portfolio, which accounted for approximately 51 percent of sales through the third quarter of this year,” said Kevin Mansell, chairman, president and chief executive officer.
Kohl’s also plans to open a 6,000-square-foot design studio this month at 2700 Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica. The site will employ 20 trend specialists and graphic artists.
