NEW YORK — Jerry Brandt, founder of the Brandt Off Price Buying Office, died Monday at his home in Pompano Beach, Fla. He was 90.
The cause of death was cancer, said his son, Barry.
Brandt opened the Brandt Buying Service in 1963 at 1410 Broadway here. It was an era when off-price retailers were evolving rapidly, and a need developed for independent off-price buying offices.
“Jerry took us under his wing and taught us the business,” said Brandt’s friend and business associate Jeffrey L. Cohen, president of Jefco International, a jobber based in Spartanburg, S.C. “He was a pioneer of the off-price industry.”
Brandt retired in 1982, handing the reins to his son, although he remained active in the business. Barry Brandt continued to operate the company until it closed in 1991.
In addition to Barry Brandt, Jerry Brandt is survived by his wife, Sally; two other sons, Kenny and Donny, and five grandchildren.
Services are scheduled for 2:15 p.m. today at Star of David Cemetery & Funeral Home, 7701 Bailey Road, North Lauderdale, Fla.
