NEW YORK — The curtain has come down on Barneys New York’s Madison Avenue bridal salon.
The company closed its three-room bridal atelier, but aside from the “Bridal Sample Sale” sign that hung on the salon’s door and the drastically reduced price tags on wedding dresses, there was little indication that Friday was the last hurrah.
Shoppers, some of whom heard about the 75 percent price cuts through a New York Times ad, found bargains. An Emanuelle Ungaro gown was marked down to $2,780 from $11,100, a Vera Wang dress was discounted to $1,279 from $5,100 and a Richard Tyler gown was priced at $1,929 from $7,700.
Barneys executives declined to comment. A Barneys saleswoman, however, said the space, which has hardwood floors and a deep window, would be used for special events for the time being. Even though it was tucked away in a corner on the eighth floor and behind doors, the atelier was not a natural fit with the nearby bustling jeans bar.
Tyler said in an interview last week that he has done “an incredible bridal business with Barneys over the years. It was a total shock to me. We were doing well, so I don’t know why.”
Tyler said he first wondered if something might be amiss last month, when a bridal customer called his company to order a dress. She told an employee that Barneys’ Madison Avenue store could not take her order, he said.
The designer said he expects to keep selling his wedding gowns in Barneys’ Los Angeles store. The retailer also sells bridal in its Chicago unit.
On Madison Avenue here, Barneys had plenty of competition from bridal resources such as Vera Wang, Reem Acra, Amsale and Carolina Herrera, which have stores nearby.
