TRY, TRY AGAIN: Wal-Mart will take a third shot at opening a discount store on Long Island, this time in Middle Island, in Suffolk County. The company already has a Sam’s Club in Medford that opened last year, but could not get approvals to build an adjacent Wal-Mart unit there. The retailer also had plans to open a Wal-Mart and a Sam’s on the site of the former Roosevelt Raceway in Westbury, but it said construction estimates were too high. The Middle Island unit, a 125,000-square-foot store on Middle Country Road, is slated for a fall opening. The company reportedly has plans for a store in Commack, but a spokeswoman declined comment.

FLAT YEAR: Stein Mart reported 1993 net sales rose 23.2 percent, to $342.7 million, but same-store sales inched up just 0.6 percent.

For the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, sales jumped 23.5 percent, to $124.4 million, with same-store sales up 2.3 percent.

The company, based in Jacksonville, Fla., expects to release full financial results the first week in March. Stein Mart opened 15 new stores in 1993, including seven in the fourth quarter, for a total of 66 stores, primarily in the South and Southeast.

PAUL PICKED: Gerald Paul, chairman and chief executive of Paul Harris Stores, has been named to the National Retail Federation board. The company, based in Indianapolis, operates 162 Paul Harris and Pasta stores, and 50 stores under the name $5-$10-$15-$20 Place.

OFF-PRICE MEETING: Off-price and outlet retailers will gather April 19-21 in Tampa, Fla., for a convention and trade expo. The event will feature 20 business sessions on such topics as marketing, real estate and operations, and more than 400 vendor booths.

It will be held at the Tampa Convention Center and is sponsored by Value Retail News of Clearwater, Fla.
