MARTINEZ HONORED: A retail industry dinner at the New York Hilton Wednesday raised $2.5 million for the National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine, smashing the old record of $1.1 million that was set in 1980.
A packed house of 1,700 came to support the hospital and honor Arthur C. Martinez, chairman and chief executive of Sears Merchandise Group, who received the hospital’s Humanitarian Award. Showing his softer side, Martinez said, “Only in America can an Irish Catholic kid born in Brooklyn with an Hispanic surname working in Chicago for a great American store get honored by a Jewish hospital in Denver. I’m touched, humbled and more than a little proud.” The money will establish the Arthur C. and Elizabeth R. Martinez Fund for Childhood Asthma.
