LONDON — Stephen Sunnucks, a U.K. retail industry veteran, has been named president of Europe, Gap Inc. International, a new position, the company said in a statement Thursday.
Sunnucks, 47, was most recently chief executive officer of New Look, a vertically integrated, fast-fashion retailer with more than 700 outlets in the U.K., Ireland and France. Under his stewardship, profits at New Look more than doubled. He left his post when the company was taken private a year ago by its founder, Tom Singh.
Sunnucks will be responsible for Gap’s European operations and for developing and leading growth strategies. He will be based in London and begin work on June 27. He reports to Andrew Rolfe, president of Gap Inc. International.
“It’s really the job of a lifetime,” Sunnucks said in a telephone interview Thursday. “Gap has three fantastic businesses which until now have been mostly U.S.-centric. But now Gap is putting a team behind its European business. My track record is helping build business in the clothing area, and my role here will be to look at positioning and strategy.”
In the statement, Paul Pressler, Gap Inc.’s president and ceo, said: “As we grow our brands internationally, this appointment reinforces Gap Inc.’s commitment to the European market.”
Sunnucks, who spent six years at New Look, has worked in the retail business for a total of 26 years. He started out, at age 21, at Marks & Spencer. He also has worked for the supermarket chain Sainsbury’s and the Burton Group, a clothing company now known as Arcadia and owned by retail tycoon Philip Green.
Since leaving New Look a year ago, he’s done consulting work for U.K. brands including Fat Face and Phase Eight.
