NEW YORK — Apparently, it’s not enough to wear a Vera Wang wedding dress. Soon newlyweds can sleep in a Vera Wang-designed suite, too.
Through a deal with the Halekulani resort in Honolulu, the designer is dressing up a room in her signature style and plans to open a signature boutique at the resort next year. Wang is decorating the space with antiques, handmade furniture, customized pillows and lighting fixtures and a few other pieces from her home collection for a fusion of Japanese and Hawaiian decor.
While the space will not be billed as a honeymoon suite, Wang expects it to be a hit with the many brides who wear her wedding dresses and tie the knot or honeymoon in Hawaii. The Halekulani declined to comment on pricing for the suite, which debuts in November. The property’s existing suites range from $775 to $4,500 per night.
Some of the items are from the designer’s burgeoning home collection, but most items were either handpicked or customized by the designer. Guests in her suite will also have access to a poolside cabana that mirrors the design scheme, “a microcosm” of her style if you will.
“Every clothing designer certainly has the ability to think in other terms. It’s a matter of translating what’s special and interesting in life, not just in clothes. Every designer is influenced by how they live, as much as they are by what they wear,” Wang said.
But she has no immediate plans for anything more grandiose. “I don’t have any plans to do anything like Mr. Armani,” she laughed, referring to Giorgio Armani’s deal with the Dubai, United Arab Emirates-based Emaar Properties that includes investing more than $1 billion to develop 14 Armani-designed properties around the world.
Next year die-hard fans who can’t bear to part with their surroundings in the Vera Wang suite at Halekulani will have the option to pick up a few keepsakes at the designer’s 550-square-foot boutique at the resort. In addition to her home accessories, furnishings and the fine jewelry collection, the designer’s bridal and ready-to-wear will also be sold there. They will even be able to write notes from their vacation on Vera Wang paper. The designer just inked a licensing deal with William Arthur Inc. for a collection of fine stationery, which is expected to launch next summer. The collection will draw from Wang’s design aesthetic and focus on wedding stationery, including invitations, informal notes and response cards.
