NEW YORK — Saying that he’s always had an interest in home, Michael Kors is launching his first collection of bedding, which will be sold exclusively at Bloomingdale’s for three months starting in mid-September.
The three-bed collection, the product of a licensing agreement between Kors and Revman International of New York, will be in 38 Bloomingdale’s stores. Of those, 15 units, including New York, will feature Michael Kors shops with fixtures.
Kors’ presence in the home business is part of a growing group of designers working to emulate the success of home power players Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Donna Karan. Asked if he thought there was room for another designer collection in a shrinking retail market with limited floor space, Kors said there is always space for product that is different and unique.
“The designer who has something to say, who is telling a story, is the one who develops a permanent place in the market, and that’s what we plan to do with home,” Kors said.
After the Bloomingdale’s exclusive ends, the collection will be made available to other retailers, should there be demand. It will not, however, be sold in Kors’ freestanding stores on Madison Avenue in Manhattan, Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills and at the Americana mall in Manhasset, N.Y., nor at two new mall locations that are to open this month at NorthPark Center in Dallas and The Westchester in suburban New York.
“This is a business that I’ve wanted to get into for a while — my family was in home textiles, but I was waiting to find the right partner that would be able to execute my ideas and my vision,” said Kors, who noted that Revman has been successful with its Tommy Hilfiger and Laura Ashley licenses.
If the bedding succeeds at retail, Kors plans to move into other home furnishings product categories, with bath next in line. “It will be slow and focused growth,” he said.
Inspired by jet-set locations, the beds, called Park Avenue, Taos and Tribeca, are sleek, but they also have a sporty edge. The graphic prints, which come directly from Kors’ ready-to-wear collection, are mixed with tailored fabrications. A Queen comforter will retail in the $299 price range, a Queen coverlet for about $179 and a complete sheet set for around $199.
Bedding that could work in any type of home — an apartment, country house or beach bungalow — was one of the main goals, said Diane Piemonte, Revman’s vice president of creative services.
“The idea was to create beds that could be accessible to different sensibilities,” said Piemonte, adding that the collection has been in the works for about a year.
