Networking: HSN’s Phone Skills … Hair Again … Taking the Local Route

HSN’S PHONE SKILLS: Home Shopping Network is known for its telephone capacity — it has more than 20,000 lines. But occasionally, a star or product will put the system over the top. HSN has learned from experience that it needs to hire extra phone operators when Tony Little, Connie Stevens, Ivana Trump and Adrien Arpel make appearances.

“For Tony, we had 250 operators above the normal staff,” said a spokeswoman, referring to the fitness guru’s appearances June 24 through 26.

Little kept the phones ringing, selling 17,000 ab isolators at $29.95 and 2,890 midi-steppers at $99, among other things.

HAIR AGAIN: If you were thinking that the world doesn’t need another hair care line, think again.

Bernard Evans believes there is a void on the shelves in ethnic products. The hair care consultant, who works privately with such high-profile clients as LaToya Jackson, developed the Platinum Hair Care System, a series of products for African-American women.

Evans will sell the line through an infomercial starring actress Daphne Maxwell Reid. Reid currently appears in “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” a sit-com airing on Fox.

The infomercial will be rolled out in September.

TAKING THE LOCAL ROUTE: Jeffrey L. Wade has been named executive vice president of affiliate relations at QVC Inc. He succeeds D. Bruce Sellers, who resigned.

Wade reports to Douglas S. Briggs, president of QVC Electronic Retailing.

It is part of QVC’s strategy to develop sophisticated marketing capability at the local cable system level. Wade comes from Showtime, where he was senior vice president and zone general manager since 1987. In his new post, he is responsible for current and future sales and affiliate agreements.
