DALLAS — Larry Pollock, president and chief executive officer of Kartens Jewelers in New Bedford, Mass., has been named president and chief operating officer of Zale Corp. here, effective Jan. 10.

Kartens is a regional jewelry chain with 19 stores. A successor for Pollock’s post at Kartens has not been named.

Zale has been without a president since last August, when Dean Groussman resigned as chairman, president and chief executive officer a few days after the company emerged from Chapter 11 reorganization.

The fine jewelry retailer expects to name a chief executive officer in the first quarter of 1994.

In addition, the company announced that Andreas Ludwig, chief financial officer and acting chief operating officer, will leave the firm Jan. 14.

He is returning to his native Austria as managing director of Tyrolit Industries, a division of the Swarovski group of companies. A successor wasn’t na-med.

Pollock’s 25-year career in fine jewelry retailing began in 1969 as a management trainee with J.B. Robinson Jewelers Inc. He worked his way up there through various management, marketing and operating positions, assisting in the merger with W.R. Grace & Co. in 1979.

Pollock served as Robinson’s president and chief executive officer from 1981 to 1986, when he assumed leadership of Kartens.

Zale operates 1,265 stores or leased departments throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico and Guam under trade names including Zales Jewelers, Gordon’s Jewelers, Bailey Banks & Biddle and Corrigan’s.
