American Eagle to Open Three Tokyo Stores

The American brand is breaking into the Japanese market.

TOKYO — American Eagle Outfitters is plotting its expansion within Japan and plans to open three stores here this year.

As reported last week, the retailer’s first store in the country will bow on April 18 within a new retail development on a busy Tokyo intersection where trendy Harajuku meets upscale Omotesando. That store will have a selling space of approximately 12,450 square feet spread across two floors.

The following day American Eagle will open its second Tokyo store, an 8,540-square-foot locale at a shopping center on an island of reclaimed land in Tokyo Bay. The brand also said it will open a third store, in the Ikebukuro area in the northwest part of Tokyo, come December.

Meanwhile, Swedish fast-fashion chain Hennes & Mauritz also continues to expand in Japan. The company said Tuesday that it will open its first store in the city of Nagoya on April 21. The two-story, 34,445-square-foot store will stock products from the retailer’s women’s, men’s, children’s and accessory lines. H&M currently operates 15 stores across Japan.
