Barneys New York will virtually double its size along Chicago’s Oak Street this spring, moving across the street to a new six-story structure complete with a penthouse-style Fred’s restaurant and 90,000 square feet of selling space.

“We wanted to give our Chicago customers a richer experience, something that will parallel the Madison Avenue flagship in New York,” said Simon Doonan, Barneys New York creative director. “It would have been very easy to stay where we were, but this next step feels right for us.”
Barneys opened its original Windy City store, which features 52,000 square feet of retail space, at the corner of Oak and Rush streets in 1992.
In the newly constructed corner building just west of its existing location, Barneys will offer an expanded collection of apparel from Lanvin, Givenchy and Bottega Veneta. The new shoe salon, featuring the work of Christian Louboutin, Givenchy and Balenciaga, among others, will span 4,000 square feet, up from its current 1,200-square-foot space available for shoes.
The new Barneys will also boast larger areas for jewelry and accessories, including a shop for Valextra leather goods, as well as new personal shopping and concierge services.
From a design perspective, the store will possess similar signature Barneys features, such as a long, open floor plan and a gallerylike interior, along with two grand staircases visible through a glass curtain wall. Its exterior references elements of late-19th-century Chicago.
The top floor Fred’s restaurant, which features outdoor seating with views of Lake Michigan, no doubt will be a welcome addition to the upscale shopping street — home to Prada, Hermès and Harry Winston — given that few food options presently exist.
Cindy Schwartz, who is the vice president and general manager of Barneys in Chicago, will retain that position with the move.
