J. Crew Teams With Sophia Webster

The footwear designer's capsule collection for the brand will debut at J. Crew's presentation during New York Fashion Week.

Sophia Webster, the British designer whose bright, playful footwear sits just on the right side of kitsch, has set her first major collaboration: a capsule collection for J. Crew that will debut at the brand’s presentation during New York Fashion Week on Tuesday, WWD has learned.

The collection includes Webster’s most popular silhouettes, which have been retooled to highlight the colors and patterns of J. Crew’s spring women’s collection. Bright taffeta fabrics; patent leather; star, floral and polka dot prints; neon shades and a palette of blues have been embellished with Webster’s trademark tassels, embroidered details and crystals.

Some 30 shoes from the collaboration will be on show, and the Sophia Webster for J. Crew Collection will launch at select J. Crew stores and jcrew.com in 2014.

Jenna Lyons, the retailer’s president and executive creative director, said Webster’s shoes “are like miniature sets — a beautiful world for your feet to spend the day in. Each shoe tells a unique story.”

Webster, whose fall presentation — set in an enchanted forest — was a highlight of London Fashion Week in February, said she did not dial down her whimsical style for the new collection.

“They definitely wanted my language to be part of it,” she said. “The collection is really fun and feminine, very me, but still a hybrid of the two brands,” said Webster, adding that it evolved “quite organically” after she saw J. Crew’s colors and fabrics from the spring season.

“The brand has a real sense of fun and color that I love, and I think that my designs complement their clothes well,” Webster said.

The capsule collection consists of 12 styles in a range of colors and patterns. There are stilettos with dainty ankle straps, pumps with contrasting heels and Webster’s signature Aztec sandals.

A J. Crew spokeswoman said the company was still nailing down prices and confirming the length of the collaboration.
