Kari Sigerson and Miranda Morrison are bringing the understated urban chic of their footwear to the mellow confines of Malibu, Calif.

The 1,500-square-foot Sigerson Morrison store opens today in the Malibu Country Mart, a quaint, often-crowded beachside collection of upscale shops.
The shopping enclave is home to California-centric brands like Lisa Kline, Ron Herman and Juicy Couture. The Sigerson Morrison store is across from Seven For All Mankind and near the future site of John Varvatos.
A long, rectangular open space with a 60-foot chrome display counter that runs almost the length of the store, the boutique has terrazzo marble floors and two separate customer seating areas with couches, white leather and pony fur chairs.
There’s hand-appliquéd silver leaf along the shoe display wall and beaded stainless steel curtains cover white oak shelves full of shoe stock along the opposite wall.
The shop is intended to reflect a laid-back yet sophisticated lifestyle typical of Malibu, and the pair is cooking up some exclusives for it, Morrison said.
Sandals have played particularly well in the California market, a trend Morrison expects to continue with the Malibu location.
“Thanks to the store on [L.A.’s] West Third Street we do have an idea three to four years later about what works in California,” Morrison said.
The store will carry the full Sigerson Morrison and Belle lines of footwear — about 150 styles — as well as handbags. The Belle line runs from $195 for flats to $500 for boots. Sigerson Morrison’s main line of shoes cost $395 to $1,200, with handbags in the $600 to $1,500 range.
Morrison said the brand seemed to have a knack for opening stores during rough economic patches.
“Hard economic times seem to be lucky for us, like a rabbit’s foot,” Sigerson said, laughing. “When all comes together — the right location, product and people — I don’t think there’s much to worry about.”
Founded in New York in 1991, Sigerson Morrison has opened three stores in the last seven months, with three locations in New York, in addition to boutiques on West Third Street and in Beverly Hills. Morrison said the brand was scouting locations in San Francisco and looking to open a store in Europe soon.
