Forget about recycling your grandmother’s fur. For the fall-winter season, Maison Martin Margiela has picked through animal skins of every description for its Artisanal collection, piecing together leather and fur, real and faux, in a wild menagerie of exotic skins and textures.
Piles of vintage handbags were crafted into leather chaps or a fitted jacket dangling clasps and straps. Tubular braids of leather adorned the seams of a Western-style fringed suede jacket, while cowboy boots with folkloric motifs were patched together on a trompe-l’oeil catsuit.
If the Wild West-themed outfits appeared heavy-handed at times, there was a definite panache to a Forties-style fur jacket incorporating tufted rosettes made from animal-patterned scarves.
