This Brooklyn-based designer is a rarity among the hyped young things this season: He designs clothes for a mature — age or otherwise — customer. Employing his signature architectural draping and stripped-away color scheme, Ames once again let his mostly superb pieces do the work. Cashmere lent suppleness to boxy coats, and silk crepe a gentleness to simple blouses and skirts (as well as a truly lovely lavender dress with fluttering panels). And basics, like a white silk turtleneck, looked efficient in the context of more sculptural numbers (an interesting cream ribbed cocoon cardigan, for instance). Yet, lest he seem too narrow in his target client — or too reverential in some of his Sander-esque silhouettes — Ames offered edgier leather options, as with a sleek black jumpsuit. Downtown denizens, meet Mr. Ames.
