Billy Reid described his men’s lineup for fall as “warmth with street toughness.” His work has a true American elegance — finely tailored yet relaxed and unaffected — and it’s hard to argue with perfectly crackled leather jackets, snug latticework hand-knit sweaters and smart herringbone suits cut just skinny enough to flatter the frame. A new, limited-edition line of rustic-looking bags designed in collaboration with Coach, made a handsome complement to the season’s plaid car coats, knitted blazers and spot-on classic footwear. While there was plenty to love, what was missing was a moment of surprise. A few unanticipated sparks might add to the brand’s appeal.
Reid brought his men’s sensibility to his women’s collection with impressive results. Appealing haberdashery looks included a long, fermented-leather officer’s coat, a floor-skimming coatdress in black leather and a fabulous midlength, double-breasted coat worn over a longer, sweeping dress, both in men’s wear plaids.
