An inspiration ripped from the headlines: In September, a hiker in the French Alps found a box of jewels reportedly worth hundreds of thousands of dollars and thought to be wreckage from a 1950 plane crash — the Malabar Princess, en route from Bombay to London. A true story, one that Adam Selman wove into a peppy, playful sophomore collection of sporty streetwear that combined offbeat English attitude with brash colors, perhaps culled from Bombay.
An evolution from last season’s overt lingerie influence, fall was “less about sex, sex, sex and more about dressing real girls,” said Selman, who has worked closely with Rihanna. A graphic black-and-white paint print was splashed on wide-leg overalls. An oversize parka and matching miniskirt came in shiny quilted nylon. Selman didn’t shy away from kitschy riffs on athletic attire, but he handled them with impressive polish.
