Michelle Smith has shown athletic influences in her Milly collection for several seasons now, but for fall, she took a modern, fresh approach to sport and focused on the ballerina.
Inspired by classical dance, Smith looked at “the new crop of ballerinas as style stars,” she said backstage. “The ballerina off duty has become the new model off duty.”
So how did Smith translate this for her contemporary girl? Into a delicate and pretty collection with luxe layers, texture and plenty of shine. Juxtaposing feminine and masculine, the designer paired tiered petal skirts with fur sweaters, a tailored tweed jacket with a pleated tulle skirt and an oversize coat over a corseted lace dress. Another key element throughout the show was all the fringe — from skirts to a beaded jacket, it was all festive and fun.
