Egyptian singer Oum Kalthoum was the impetus behind Ryan Lobo and Ramon Martin’s fall collection for Tome.
The designers said that in the Sixties, Kalthoum was known to wear brands like Balenciaga and Dior; thus it was Western fashion with an Arabic sensibility that became the duo’s starting point.
Hinting at Sixties glamour, the lineup mixed opulence and austerity, many of the shapes floating away from the body. For day, there were chic oversize cocoon coats, double-faced wool dresses and classic merino wool sweaters. Evening was the real standout: rich jacquard skirts, gold lamé shirts, a jacquard topper and a dress in sheer lace over pink lamé. Everything was delivered with a youthfully sophisticated edge.
