Add film buff Maxime Simoens to the list of designers looking to the final frontier for inspiration: He name-checked the Oscar-nominated feature “Gravity” backstage.
There were hints of Sixties brands like Courrèges in his boxy “space cadet” tailoring and short shift dresses banded with fur or crystals.
The theme mainly influenced surface decoration on body-con pants, pencil skirts and cocktail dresses. Laser-cut rabbit fur was meant to mimic lunar landscapes; silver glitter, Lurex and sequins gave a night-sky aspect to his sexy, showy clothes.
While his day and cocktail clothes could use more youthful verve, Simoens has scored on the red carpet, having recently dressed the likes of Bérénice Bejo, Léa Seydoux and Rachel McAdams on the festival and awards circuits. Stargazing, indeed.
