Held at East Village record store A1, AG’s fall collection was a throwback to the life and style of Nineties young Hollywood. The impossibly flattering Phoebe jean, a vintage high-waist cut in the brand’s interpretation of two-tone seaming, paired with any number of the lightly distressed muscle tanks, T-shirts and feather-soft raglan tops, easily call to mind the likes of a young Kate Moss or Winona Ryder — accessible, classic, effortless. Nineties references have been creeping up on the runway the past few seasons, and the AG team managed to embrace the spirit of the time without showing anything too trite.
The jean styles were great all-around, with 90 percent of the selvage denim coming from Japanese mills. The aforementioned Phoebe fit also came in a distressed style with minimal tonal butterfly embroidery, and the new Isabelle fit, a straight leg with exposed buttons and slightly cropped stepped hem helped create long, lean lines. The beauty in the denim lies with the endless amount of color and wash options available for each style; once customers find a fit that works, they could build a diverse range of bottoms that transitions day-to-night.
While perceived primarily as a denim label, the brand decided two years ago to evolve into contemporary lifestyle. This season was marked by some pretty strong outerwear — shearling-lined coats, suede fringe jackets, workwear jackets and variations of the classic denim jacket, like the new Cassie fit with seaming detailing along the front and oversized construction, or a washed down-version in black. Outerwear played to a vintage sensibility that felt very of-the-moment cool, with style that transitioned seasons. T-shirts and tanks were created with an aging process for a lived-in quality that was soft to the touch. Men’s wear looks paralleled women’s with a focus on new outerwear and tops, notably the distressed leather jackets, cotton canvas field coat, and similarly soft long-sleeve tops and relaxed neckline Ts created through a newly launched program with recycled Japanese cotton. It all made for a rounded-out collection that complements what AG does so well with bottoms.
