Showing in Paris for the first time, Umit Benan hit a home run with his Forties Americana-themed collection. Looking to sports hero Jackie Robinson for inspiration, the Turkish designer sent a team of old-school dandies out onto the baseball field-cum-catwalk he had built for the occasion.
Generous proportions defined Benan’s vintage tailoring in corduroy, tweed and wools. Three-piece suits featured high-waist trousers that were abbreviated at the bottom but otherwise cut loose. Roomy overcoats had a nice swagger, while tops switched from baseball jerseys to quilted jackets. They were all styled with shirts, neckties and turtlenecks. “A little old-school, a little modern — just like me,” Benan said backstage.
