Many a fashion show is more about smoke and mirrors than actual clothes for retail, but John Bartlett was clearly in the spirit of the times at his presentation for the Claiborne by John Bartlett collection. “Everything in this room is under $100, except for one blazer,” said the designer in the brand’s Midtown showroom, walking through the clean, easy-to-wear collection that was inspired by the adolescent sea-faring film “White Squall.” Nautical influences were evident in striped cotton sweaters, numerous shorts and drawstring pants. A refreshing palette of sea blues, mandarin orange, leafy greens and petunia purples enlivened shirts, sweaters and polos, which were matched with denim shorts (built-in belt included, for both looks and value) or nondenim, five-pocket bottoms. The overall effect? Clean, fresh American sportswear, at a price everyday Americans can afford.
