“The men in Marilyn Monroe’s life” provided the framework for Bastian’s second outing with Gant, presented in small co-ed vignettes due to the addition of women’s wear this season. Joe DiMaggio contributed a baseball motif seen in embroideries, intarsia and gym clothes. Blazers of herringbone and corduroy carried a whiff of literary glamour (Arthur Miller.) But the rakish prepsters on display mainly resembled young Kennedys in their polos, oxfords, madras and seersucker. Bastian injected witty references to honeymooning, such as a T-shirt with a trompe l’oeil camera hanging below the neck, and a lot of ripped, light jeans just to keep it all from looking stuffy or old.
