“Where are you going with your life?” crooned songstress Alice Smith, in a live cabaret performance during the Michael Bastian show. The answer this season is Paris, as Bastian was inspired by a series of classic French films, like “The Red Balloon” and “The Dreamers,” that he watched while battling a cold. That meant an array of stylish Gallic archetypes, from schoolboys with leather backpacks to gigolos in thigh-revealing shorts and snug knitwear. There were some literal references to get the point across: a cute red balloon on the back of a sweater, a slew of straw boaters and “Paris” emblazoned on a vélo cap. But the French influences were filtered through Bastian’s sexed-up American sportswear — which sometimes brings to mind shades of Dsquared2 — with short swim trunks, lightweight tennis sweaters and upscale riffs on gymwear; clever Michael Bastian by Stubbs & Wootton slippers anchored many of the outfits. The overall effect washed away last season’s rebellious flirtation with a moodier, Gothic look.
