Imagining the lifestyle of Californian surfers who divide their time between the beach and various summer festivals, the Marc by Marc Jacobs spring collection offered an odd mix of tribal and patchwork patterns — along with Mars landscapes — splashed on T-shirts, shorts and tank tops.

The fabrics were often technical: Rubber-coated cotton with heat-sealed seams on a raincoat, for example, or Tyvek, a durable and water-resistant material usually used for labeling, here employed for a windbreaker.

Evening looks were softer, including a colored-blocked silk blazer that was as light as a shirt.
