Who knew there were so many “new romantic” types in London? Denizens of the Soho nightlife scene descended on the infamous subterranean 100 Club for a show by anarchic tailor, Sir Tom Baker, including Queen drummer Roger Taylor, who sat front row. Known for dressing such rock royalty as Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant and John Cooper Clarke, Baker didn’t disappoint his fans with distressed tailcoats sporting leather holsters and punk chains, plus voluminous capes – one of which was emblazoned with “F*** you.” Hats were in collaboration with milliner Stephen Jones, while shoes were by Jeffrey West.
“It’s a combination of delinquents and military,” the designer said of his inspiration, musing: “There’s often little distinction between law breakers and law makers. They’re generally both things at once.”
At the end of the show, models were spotted wandering off en masse into the bowels of Soho — still sporting Sir Tom’s collection, expletive slogan cape included.
