Two decorative motifs framed Carolina Herrera’s pre-fall collection: shooting stars and leopard spots. The former came as understated embroideries on a slick gray wool pencil skirt and down the front of a white silk blouse; the latter appeared as an abstract print laced with silver lamé on a short, one-shoulder cocktail dress and a long, lean robe gown. Throughout, there was plenty of Herrera’s sophisticated fare for women of impeccable taste, such as a double-face wool and cashmere coat with knit sleeves, a grosgrain bolero and a trim wool gown with velvet straps — all in black, because “it’s always good to have black,” said Herrera.
