Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen approached pre-fall as an extension of spring — thus, they continued to push their major tailoring story, not to mention occasional touches of pink and the overarching clean, spare vibe. “But we nipped everything a bit,” said Ashley, “and made things sexier.” Sexy, yes, though languidly so. The Olsens played on proportions with a slight Seventies bent — coats came elongated with a wider notched lapel, leather dresses were oversized and a moss-green alligator jacket was punched up with a jagged-edged peplum. Meanwhile, elegant maxi gowns, overlaid with lace, sported a stylish slit up the front. But the major news here was a terrific layering story in which the sisters threw day dresses over ultraflared trousers. (Even on the diminutive designers, the look was chic.) And in a nod to their upcoming fall collection, which they said will feature an ample use of skins, out came a simple silk blouse with an adorable Peter Pan collar — cut from salmon skin.
